What is IQM?

Integrated quality management, or IQM, is a European-led initiative aimed at encouraging the development and implementation of a sustainable and quality oriented approach to tourism. A quality service only exists inasmuch as the visitor, or consumer, perceives it to meet their expectations and requirements. It is important therefore to take into account all aspects of the visitor experience, from initial planning through travel, destination information, accommodation to the 'after sales' care and communication.

The late 1990s saw the European Commission instigate a series of studies into integrated quality management in rural, urban and coastal tourism destinations across Europe.

How does IQM Work?

The principles of integrated quality management take into account the whole of a destination's tourism system. It is an initiative that relies heavily on community involvement and participation and allows a form of integrated dialogue to develop between potential visitors, tourism stakeholders at local and regional levels, and sustainable economic and cultural development initiatives.

Quality management requires a continuous and dynamic process, not a one off initiative and as such the approach taken needs to be one that becomes reflected in all the normal activities undertaken by a destination: promotion; information provision; developing and improving product and so on.

The basic aims of quality management are to improve the quality of the tourism experience through:

  • Meeting social needs

  • Improving competitiveness of businesses

  • Preserving the cultural environment

  • Preserving the natural environment
