15/8/2005 Your business may be called on by ecodyfi to talk rubbish! The regeneration group for the Dyfi Valley wants to know not only what is in your bin, but what you think of local waste and recycling services.ecodyfi is carrying out a waste audit of businesses in the Dyfi Valley. The idea is to get a clear picture of the waste—how much of each material there is—and to discover what stops businesses reducing their waste more. The study will also assess where the majority of rubbish gets taken for final disposal or reprocessing. Tom O’Kane of ecodyfi said, “We have plenty of evidence about what goes into the household bin, and now we will be able to add to this a clear picture of what local businesses are throwing away. Not only is this a chance for us to discuss present waste and recycling services with local businesses, but we hope to discover waste materials that can be used for local reprocessing.” The project has been funded by Glasu, the European-funded initiative to make more of local resources in Powys, and by the National Assembly’s Environment Wales initiative. Glasu’s Manager Rebecca Webb applauded ecodyfi’s approach of viewing rubbish as a potential resource. “This could aid job creation by being a raw material for new local businesses”, she said. “We hope that this relatively quick and simple study will serve as a template for other groups wishing to carry out similar projects in their areas”. New technologies are constantly raising the possibilities for recycling, meaning that what was just a load of old rubbish is gradually becoming a more valuable resource.
