If it can't persuade bus companies to run scheduled services it will explore new options, including buses that run only when requested and shared taxis. The Dyfi Valley Public Transport Users Group will be formed at a meeting at the Tabernacl in Machynlleth on Thursday 27th January. It aims to give a voice to local users of buses and trains. They are the people who know how valuable the services are and how they can be improved - sometimes at no extra cost, for example when services are slightly re-timed to connect with other services. Jan Morgan of Corris is one of the people behind the scheme. She acknowledged the local authorities' role in co-ordinating services (as well as subsidizing some of them) but said they needed the detailed knowledge of users. "In theory, the evening train from Shrewsbury gets into Machynlleth at 9.06 in time to catch the 9.10 to Corris", she said. "Any train user knows that half the time this doesn't work and people are left stranded." One of the group's targets is expected to be the inadequacy of public transport in the evenings. This might be young people wanting to spend an evening in Aberystwyth or anybody trying to get back from Machynlleth to one of the villages. Another organizer, Nat Taplin of Upper Corris, agreed that large buses running around mostly empty was not the answer. "We need more imagination in the use of buses and taxis and to find out what people really want", he said. "This might mean that travelers have to phone up in advance to order an evening bus, and that it might turn out to be a taxi charging a normal bus fare!" The new group will also contribute to efforts to improve rail services, and lobby Arriva to offer more interchangeable tickets - so that passengers can go one way on the bus and come back on the train. Its intention is to get more people onto public transport by improving both the services and the information about them. The meeting in the Tabernacl lobby is timed to match bus services by starting at 7 pm and ending at 9 pm. Great travel and shop discounts will be raffled to those signing up on the night.
