Help conserve our environment and improve our quality of life

press release 22/07/2004

Launch of the real nappies projectFive families have been selected by ecodyfi to trial a variety of real nappies over the coming year.

Real nappies are a washable, comfortable, trendy, modern alternative to disposable nappies, which will save the families money and reduce our rubbish.

ecodyfi volunteers Grace Bailey and Claudine Goganian are working closely with the families to provide advice and make sure everything runs smoothly.

In exchange, the families involved will fill out questionnaires and give feedback to ecodyfi on the effectiveness of the nappies in comparison to disposables.

They have also been asked to assess how the different types of real nappies compare.

This information will be valuable to ecodyfi and other organisations offering advice on real nappies.

The nappies were bought from a Welsh company in its infancy, based in Nebo, Gwynedd.

'BabyKind' is run by Helen and Mark Burr who are very enthusiastic about real nappies and see the potential for growth in the Welsh market.

Helen said "We are able to offer what we have found to be the best varieties, having tried them all out on our own children".

The families involved were very pleased with their new nappies and said that they were glad to be involved in a project that would reduce our rubbish.

Sarah Keen and Rory Calder, who have a newborn, said, "We want to use real nappies because we don't like the thought of something our baby will wear for just a few hours littering up landfill sites for around 500 years".

Funding for this project was provided by Environment Wales with support from the National Assembly.

They already support a nationwide real nappy campaign through Sustainable Wales.

ecodyfi is working in conjunction with Powys and Ceredigion real nappy campaigns.

If you would like to learn more about real nappies, call Tom O'Kane at ecodyfi on 01654 703965.

He can arrange for one of their experienced volunteers to come and talk to groups or advise individuals on any aspect of real nappies.
