Help conserve our environment and improve our quality of life

Pentrebach guest housesWith its graded 4-star cottages and Green Dragon Level 2 certification Pentre Bach Holiday Cottages of Llwyngwril, near Dolgellau won the ARENA Network Wales Environment Award for Sustainable Tourism.

By actively managing 'green' issues the business was able to demonstrate the many ways in which it is developing itself on a sustainable basis and impressed the judges ahead of the other 3 finalists in the category.

The Award was sponsored by the Wales Tourist Board and, in presenting the trophy, Jonathan Jones, Chief Executive, said: "Pentre Bach Cottages not only demonstrate their commitment to environmental and sustainability issues but also open the eyes of all their visitors and guests to practical ways of pursuing a more sustainable approach whether in business or in the home."

The prestigious ARENA Network awards, staged simultaneously in North and South Wales, attracted record entries in 2003.

The event showcased a wide range of environmental best practice in business andother organisations across Wales.

Assembly Finance Minister Sue Essex, in a keynote speech at the event, said: "The First Minister referred in the foreword to the Awards programme to Wales leading role on sustainability.

The Welsh Assembly Government's commitment to sustainable development remains as strong as ever. We cannot rest on our laurels; much remains to be done.

"Surveys indicate that despite recognising the benefits of improved environmental performance, less than a third of smaller Welsh businesses have an environmental policy in place."

"The organisations represented here tonight are the role models. Wales needs more businesses and organisations to follow their example."
