The Dyfi Valley community group that built the first community wind turbine in Wales has announced that it intends to build a second one.It will replace an existing turbine on Mynydd Glandulas and will be owned by as many local people as wish to invest in it. Bro Dyfi Community Renewables Ltd was formed in 2001 to create opportunities for the local community to benefit more from the use of the wind and other clean sources of power. Its first project was the 75 kilowatt wind turbine at Cilgwyn, on Forestry Commission land above the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT). It has been producing pollution-free energy since it was switched on by Cynog Dafis and Glantwymyn Councillors Hugh D Jones and Bill Owen in April 2003. The 59 shareholders, only a few of which are not local, have decided to make a bigger impact in the fight against climate change by replacing the now redundant prototype turbine south of CAT. They estimate that the one million units of electricity generated by the new turbine every year will avoid 430 Tonnes of carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere annually. Part of the income for the 75 kW turbine has been paying for free energy-efficient light bulbs handed out in Corris, Cwmllinau and elsewhere by the local Community Energy Fund. This is managed by ecodyfi on behalf of the community wind group, CAT and Glantwymyn Community Council. Similarly, it is hoped that part of the proceeds from the new turbine will be used for carbon-saving transport work through ecodyfi. A packed public meeting at the Owain Glyndwr Institute in Machynlleth on Tuesday October 26th heard members of the co-operative explain the project. There was overwhelming support for the proposal, including from Glantwymyn Councillor Hugh D Jones. I hope a good number of local people will take advantage of the opportunity this offers, he said. Ecodyfi on 01654 703965 has details of how to get involved. Further information: Andy Rowland, Manager,
