25/2/2005 Ecodyfi and Adfywio Mawddwy are cooking up a scheme to heat the school, hotel and houses with hot water from a central boiler fuelled with chipped wood. This could all be contracted to one supplier, but the local economy would benefit more if the village itself managed the fuel supply. On Wednesday the 9th March there will be a public meeting in Dinas Mawddwy Hall to discuss the project. Earlier public meetings have supported the idea in principle and ecodyfi has used money from the Welsh Development Agency to commission further work from Mid Wales Energy Agency. Before the Agency can ask potential equipment suppliers for designs and cost estimates, it needs to ask the community how much control it wishes to have over the scheme if it goes ahead. This will be the main business of the evening. One option is for Adfywio Mawddwy or another local group to organise the fuel supply, meter reading and billing and to receive all the income from heat users. This would require some voluntary effort to manage the operation, but would create a job for a local person. It would also make a profit that could be spent on other community projects. This is in line with the aims of Adfywio Mawddwy, so the same meeting will consider whether it should become an incorporated organisation with its own legal status. The group feels the potential health and environmental benefits are important - there would be less air pollution than from oil or coal and by replacing oil, coal and gas with a "carbon-neutral" and renewable fuel, the village would become part of the solution for climate change. Members were enthused by the woodchip systems they saw at Llanwddyn and Preston during an ecodyfi field trip in January. Meanwhile, Adfywio Mawddwy volunteers are going house to house seeking information about existing heating systems. The system's cost depends partly on how many houses already have radiators. Secretary Arfon Hughes emphasised that they wanted to meet local needs by using local resources and to support forestry, farming and maintenance jobs. "Buying locally-produced energy keeps the money longer in the local economy", he said. The meeting is open to all and starts at 7.30 p.m. Further information:Andy Rowland, Manager, ecodyfi. tel: 01654 703965. Arfon Hughes, Secretary of Adfywio Mawddwy 07979 803547
