The next opportunity for people living in the Powys part of the Dyfi valley to influence the way services are delivered is on December 17th 2003. The Local Community Forum will be focussing on the topic of transport at 7.30 p.m., at the Care Centre in Machynlleth. The difficulty of reaching vital services like health care and training is one of the reasons the area was designated as a Communities First area by the National Assembly. This also applies to shopping and leisure activities. In some cases it may be possible to resist the centralisation of these services or even to deliver them where people live. Often, however, improving the situation means improving transport provision. Nearly a quarter of households in this area do not have a private car. Others are forced to spend more than they can afford on running two cars because there aren't enough other options for getting around. At this meeting you can say what kind of journeys you need to make and what kind of services would work for you. We will consider walking and cycling as well as motorised transport and trains. These activities are important for our health and bring wealth into the area as well. Transport is an issue that affects visitors as well as local people. Much is already being done. CAMAD and the Red Cross both provide services for people in particular need and have plans to expand some of these. Finding your way round the Dyfi Valley by bus, train, bike and foot has just got a lot easier, thanks to a colourful new guide from the community regeneration group ecodyfi. Featuring a 'tube-style' bus and train map, the bi-lingual Guide shows you how to get between all the main places in the Valley. It's also packed with other useful information to help you get about without the car. The Forum provides a means for us to identify what's important to us and to tell agencies like the County Council. Come along and join in! |
