Help conserve our environment and improve our quality of life

press release 20/2/2004

A new future is being planned for the old forestry buildings and surrounding land that is known as Ceinws Camp.

The people of Ceinws and Esgairgeiliog are being asked what they'd like to see on the two hectare site which forms a prominent part of their village.

Ecodyfi, Communities First, Forestry Commission Wales, Glantwymyn Community Council and the Welsh Development Agency are working together to find complimentary uses for the site that meet the needs of the local and wider community.

Rural Resources, a Welshpool-based company, have been contracted to consult local people and other interested parties and draw up a preliminary feasibility study.

Their previous work includes a similar project in Trawscoed, Ceredigion.

The project leader, Phil Newcombe, is enthusiastic about the potential in Ceinws.

"The Camp is clearly an important physical part of the village.

We're keen to find out what people think should happen there and how these activities would fit in with the rest of the area", he said.

Phil is already busy drawing up a leaflet and questionnaire to help people express their views.

The steering group hopes this will go out to all residents during the first week of March.

Local councillor Hugh Williams is a member of the group.

"I hope everybody will take a few minutes to jot their thoughts down, whether they have an idea for the site or are worried about what might happen", he urged.

The consultation is not just for the village itself either. "Anybody with a constructive idea should contact me, Hugh or ecodyfi", explained Phil. "Particularly if they want to play an active part in bringing this site to life", he added.

The steering group is already looking forward to two events being planned for Wednesday the 17th March, where people can discuss the ideas put forward.

This initiative is seen as a great opportunity to get one or a number of small projects up and running which can contribute to the vitality of the village and the wider community as a whole.
