30/4/2004 Internet prize within our grasp! The campaign to get Broadband for Machynlleth called for a last push when announcing the winner of its logo competition.
Broadband is a fast way of sending and receiving information over the Internet. For users at home it allows computer programmes, music and television from almost anywhere in the world to be delivered right to your own screen. For business users it can boost productivity and reduce costs, both beneficial to the local economy and jobs in this area. The Winner! The Machynlleth Broadband Project presented 13 year old Eluned Glyn of Derwenlas with a Playstation 2 before a meeting of Machynlleth Town Council. Andy Rowland of ecodyfi explained that they had been fortunate in securing funding from the Welsh Development Agency to buy the prize at a reduced price from Top Shop Videos. Eluned's logo was judged to be the best - beating off competition from class mates, adults and even an Australian entry! Eluned said she was very happy to win. She uses the internet in the Library, where they already have Broadband speed. Her winning design was polished by David Thorpe of Cyberium before being released as the official campaign logo. In making the presentation, the Mayor, Tecwyn Jones, said that he was looking forward to Machynlleth no longer being disadvantaged by slow access to internet services. He urged people to sign the petitions at Ty Bro Ddyfi, Kelvin Jenkins' shop and elsewhere so that the critical number of 400 interested people is reached quickly. Andy Rowland stressed that the whole valley needs this means of communication. Corris and Talybont exchanges will be brought up to date later this year because enough people have registered their interest there. Campaigns are afoot in Dinas Mawddwy, Cemmaes Road and Aberdyfi but there are some areas where higher-tech 'wireless' solutions may have to be found. Sign up now!The Machynlleth Broadband Campaign urges anybody who would like an "always-on" fast internet connection to register their interest at both the BT site www.bt.com/broadband and its own website www.machbroadband.org.uk.
