Help conserve our environment and improve our quality of life

3/2/2004 ecodyfi press release

The campaign to bring the Dyfi valley into the 21st century information world kicks into a higher gear this week with the launch of a competition.

Residents of the Dyfi valley are being offered the chance to win a Playstation 2 by designing a logo for the Machynlleth Broadband Campaign.

Broadband is a fast way of sending and receiving information over the Internet.

For users at home it allows computer programmes, music and television from almost anywhere in the world to be delivered right to your own screen.

For business users it can boost productivity and reduce costs, both beneficial to the local economy and jobs in this area.

These are all good reasons for having Broadband but there's a catch - we can't have it in this area unless enough people register their interest in it.

The company that can give us Broadband Internet is BT but they won't move until the number of people saying they want it reaches a special number.

They call it the 'trigger level'. For Machynlleth the number is 400 people - it's fewer for the other telephone exchanges in the Dyfi Valley.

The Machynlleth Broadband Campaign urges anybody who would like an "always-on" fast internet connection to register their interest at both the BT site www.bt.com/broadband and its own website www.machbroadband.org.uk.

Otherwise the Dyfi valley will continue to lag behind.

Ecodyfi, the community regeneration group, has secured help from the WDA to stimulate interest in the campaign. "We want you to design the logo to go on all our broadband leaflets - and to make it more fun, we are going to show all the entries on our web site and in the window at Ty Bro Ddyfi in Machynlleth", said John Behnan, one of the Campaign leaders.

"Whoever makes the logo we think is best will win a PLAYSTATION 2 and their logo will be professionally drawn and printed on all our posters and paperwork".

Entry forms can be found on the website, at Tŷ Bro Ddyfi, Machynlleth Telecentre and the Library or downloaded here [pdf file: 150kB]. The closing date of the competition is February 29th 2004.
