the happy bin

Bulletin board

The problems, solutions and good ideas that pupils have for reducing waste in school.

  1. Question:Ysgol Pennal: A question from our cook - The compost bins are nearly full, but the contents of the bins are not ready to be used in the garden as compost. What can we do?
Please help Ysgol Pennal and email your reply to greeneggco@lineone.net.
Answer: Try a compost corner in your garden. Turn the compost over in the bin/corner so that it breaks down quicker. Good luck, Dinas Mawddwy School.
  2. This question has been asked by Class 3 at Craig yr Wylfa.
Question: How can we re cycle the green paper hand drying towels?
Answer: At Pennal some of the green hand towels are shredded and put into the compost bin - it seems to work fine as long as they are shredded small enough and not too much is placed into the bins - we have quite a few compost bins at school. The remainder are collected by the Council every 2 weeks for recycling.
  3. Question: At Ysgol Pennal we have a lot of deliveries with cardboard boxes. As the Council will not collect cardboard for recycling (even though they collect most other paper), we were wondering how other schools deal with this waste problem?
Answer: Cardboard composts well if you mix it with grass clippings. - Tony Heales
