Review of Fairtrade Fortnight

  • February meeting - 40 people and good contacts - but direct contact also important

  • Slips returned - over 1,100 to date and rising - most stickers have gone (WH re reprint)

  • Raffle - 549-40p - well worth doing

  • Press - coverage each week in Cambrian News with good pic of Brian Namara - need TV as well - ask Amanda Roll-Pickering for help at CAT - link up wider (WH)

  • Market stall - very effective when weather OK and Traidcraft people sold £100 each

  • Quantum leap in public awareness since last year

  • Co-op stall - interest just kept going - Co-op itself still not highly motivated - need to seek meeting with regional level - stocks, staff, end of isle, value of ft to them - write to thank ... (WH)

  • Quarry Shop - good response

  • Schools - Diane did 12 primary - asked children to take slips home for parents and return to teachers. Bro Dyfi School not very interested. (DI)

  • About 4,500 leaflets distributed - local popular newspapers a good idea - but to get names face to face essential - maybe smaller 'awareness leaflet next time

  • Tabernacle meeting - about 30 people - very sympathetic - Tabernacle interested itself (KJ, NR)

  • Producers visit - went well at school (Mach primary), Co-op (press) and Leisure centre - cost train fare (51-80p)

  • Leisure Centre went FT.

Finance and resources

  • Total spend to date = £1036.24p

  • Total income to date = 760.06p

  • Shortfall = 276.13

  • Will to continue as secretary / treasurer unless someone volunteers for treasurer job

  • Royal Mail had lost all Co-op grant applications - WH to resubmit

  • Bank account now open

  • 10% Co-op discount card coming

  • New budget - see below

Next steps

  • We now have a 'democratic mandate'

  • We should apply for fairtrade zone status (WH)

  • While we are applying for fairtrade zone status we should try to sign up 100 organisations in the valley to a "Roll of Honour" cf FT Presenter (WH, All)

  • We should have walking float at Machynlleth Carnival (17th July, NR to find out)

  • We should organise a "Declaration of fairtrade zone status day" in September when the schools come back - stand by temporary road signs around the valley and in Machynlleth and street event with chefs, fairtrade pancakes and public in Machynlleth (WH, YG/JL at CAT, All)

  • Leaflet with "Roll of Honour"= Fair Trade Directory for September - adds to Powys one which will only have bigger local companies in it (WH)

  • Seek meeting with Co-op at regional level (WH - Duncan Rees)

  • KJ had made a FT banner with Elemental Earth (KJ, bring to next meeting)

  • There may be interest also in a local BB/Hotel meeting with FT a way of promoting business (Hilary, Mrs C Hancock, Livy, WTB or other)

  • *New budget
    • Reprint sticker 1000 - 420

    • Leaflets - 250

    • Machynlleth Carnival Float (July) - 200

    • September Road Signs - 100

    • September FT Directory - 500

    • September FT Pancake Party - 400

    • Total - £1,870

Powys and Wales
